We chose your company over Hawaiian Movers and White Glove Movers because the office staff was so efficient and friendly and timely. All of the estimates were within range of each other so cost became a non factor.
The packing/shipping team, Micah, Donovan, Victoria and (oh goodness 1 month and I can’t remember this gentleman’s name) – Lewis? Frank? were exceptional. They packed our goods like they were their own. They were friendly, efficient, and extremely careful. What more could we ask. They were kind and caring. They made sure we had our comfortable chairs available to us until the very last minute.
At first we were dismayed that our household goods and car were going to take a long time to arrive. Our expectations were exceed when both arrived earlier than expected.
Joel, Jose, and Hunter were here when the container arrived and unloaded all the furniture the first evening. They even made our bed so we could get off the floor where we had been sleeping on an air mattress. Maybe OK at 20 not so easy at 72! They unloaded all the boxes and unpacked everything and put it away for us, with the exception of our pictures which we asked them to leave as we didn’t know where they were to go. They were sweet, and fun and very productive while being so careful with our household goods. I wish you could have seen them unpacking my china. You would have thought the pieces were priceless. It was a package deal to let them take care of shipping arrangements – which they did. On both ends Jim provided someone to come to our secure storage building to palletize our 25 bins and wrap them for shipping to Seattle to the Matson terminal. Our car was waiting for us at the Kona airport parking lot when we arrived. Our bins of belongings were delivered to our storage building rental unit until we could move them into our condo that was not yet ready for us to occupy. The service provided by Jim and Lauren McCain to move our household goods, garage contents, a motorcycle, and two cars from Los Angeles to Hawaii Island was just excellent. We had some very heavy items to move – large safe, table saw, jointer, planer, and a motorcycle – and a forklift was used to very easily get those heavy items into and out of the container. Our household goods were packed by Jim’s local Los Angeles team and nothing was damaged when we unpacked it, which was quite remarkable considering how fragile some of it is. We also took advantage of Jim’s concierge service for him to get our cars registered in Hawaii and after experiencing the hassle of me registering my motorcycle in Hawaii Jim’s car concierge service was worth every cent. My wife moved first and when her car got delayed in Honolulu he provided a free rental car for her until it arrived. Jim and Lauren take care of you in every possible way to take the worry out of the move and since we also had two dogs to move that was a lot of potential worry. I wholeheartedly recommend Jim and Lauren for any move within their move area.

Jim handled all of our shipping which consisted of a car by regular “car shipping”, a 40 ft. container, then 4 months later another container (20 ft). I have been a nuclear plant inspector and still am an airplane inspector, and you can rest assured if there was anything about Jim or his services we were not satisfied with that we would have not used him a second time. I have recommended him openly on the konaweb.com site as well as locally. I have never met Jim in person, but we really couldn’t have got our stuff handled as good as he and his contacts did. PLUS, he was a whole lot cheaper, which is normally always a suspect thing to me. Our 1st container had a collector car and 4 motorbikes as well as household and other items, the second one was mostly Karen’s precious items and the rest of the household items. Our second container was considerably overweight, and he even got it changed to a commercial rate to lower that charge! He was also great about keeping us posted about where things were and the status on the trips from Alabama. We recommend him 100%. If we ever lose our minds and move back to the mainland, he’ll be our man again.

We were pretty concerned about it getting to Hawaii safely, with no scratches, and the least amount of exposure to salt water as possible. We felt very reassured after speaking to him and he even recommended one of the specific ships that was enclosed rather than partially open to the salt air. We were kept informed every step of the way. He was able to get a price that was lower than the company quoted us. The knowledge he has of the shipping company’s schedule was very helpful. Shipping my car was one of the least stressful parts of moving my household from Virginia to Hawaii, thanks to the Kona Car Guy! His door-to-door service was as close to that as it could be — the 16-car-carrier trailer picked my car up in the parking lot a block from my home. Next time I saw it was in Hawaii about 15 minutes away from our new shack in the woods (on a private road no car carrier could ever hope to traverse). When I went to pick up my car, I saw none of the salt spray residue that I’d heard about from others who shipped their vehicles here. We made our move in June-July from California to Kona, a jam-packed 20′ Matson container, with the excellent service of Jim McCain – aka Kona Car Guy – and are happy to give him our unqualified recommendation.

Jim’s rate is per container. That turned out to be important. I also got a quote from KonaTrans and the local SoCal mover they work with offered very little specific information. Their quote was based on 7000 lb load (as the average household move) with an open-ended addition to be made when the container is weighed at port. Our container came in just shy of 10,000 lb and with the KonaTrans arrangement we would not have known the actual cost until the port weigh-in. With Jim’s per-container rate, we had the amount locked in from the start.
We boxed or otherwise packed our stuff and went with his service that includes his crews loading the container and unloading at the new location. He has a less expensive rate if you want to load/unload yourself, but I would not suggest it unless you have experience loading containers for ocean shipment. Jim’s crew has that experience and it paid off with a nearly break-free move.
In addition, we moved 2 vehicles and the KonaTrans SoCal rep was not at all interested in that business, suggesting we make arrangements ourselves with Matson. Because KonaCarGuy Jim discounts bundled services, our cost for the cars (including flatbed delivery from Hilo to Kona) turned out to be less than the Matson fee would have been to us directly.
